George Calhoun Wise and Frannie Coogle-3rd Great Grandparents

George Calhoun Wise
Frances "Frannie" Coogle
When George Calhoun Wise was born on April 17, 1844, in South Carolina, his father, David, was 34 and his mother, Rosannah, was 23. They had 11 children-seven sons and four daughters. Two of their sons, Tyre and William died during the Civil War. George also fought in the Civil War and lost a leg in the Battle of the Wilderness.

No one was ever supposed to mention his peg leg. They all migrated to Georgia around 1870 and settled around the town of Plains, and George died on May 25, 1898.

George married twice. His first wife's name was Rhodella Etheridge. She died as a young mother on May 22, 1875, in Webster County, Georgia. She was  22. They had three children but only one survived. His name named Allen and he married a girl named Martha Cobb.

George then married Frannie Coogle in 1877 and they had 8 children-five sons and three girls. Their names were Walter, George, William, John, Rosa, Hattie Belle, Mellie Mae and my great great grandfather Daniel. Frannie died on November 24th, 1942. Census records suggest that she lived part of her life with Hattie after he husband died.

  1. George Calhoun Wise was my great grandfather. My maternal grandfather is George Wise. Do you know which one he is in the family photo?

I recognize that picture of Frannie Coogle Wise, because it hung on the wall in the house that I grew up in for years. My brother has it now.

  2. Interesting. Thanks!

I have been doing research on the Wise family and came across the history of the Lutheran church that they began in Bottsford just outside of Plains. I didn't know that the church had been been moved. We used to attend the homecoming that was held there every summer.

  3. He had six children - four girls and two boys. All of them, including my mother, are deceased. They lived in Plains, GA until the late 1930's or early 1940's. That is when they moved to Bronwood, GA in Terrell County. I only knew him as an elderly man, but he worked with the post office in his early days and was the overseer of a large farm. The house that they lived in was built in 1823 and was the oldest house in that area. It has been restored and added onto since then. Daddy Wise (as we called him) passed away in 1976.

I remember my Mom talking about Dan Wise. Would that have been your grandfather?

    1. Dan Wise was my Great-Great Grandfather. He left Georgia as a young man and married a girl in New Orleans. They had 3 sons, his youngest was my Great Grandpa Daniel. Dan Wise disappeared in the 1930's. Everyone suspected he was murdered but they never found the body.

  4. I remember that story. Sad....

What I recall is that they suspected that the sheriff did it. He wanted the property that Dan lived on and actually acquired it after he went missing.

  5. Thanks for posting all of this. I recently started to research the Wise family. I was so glad to come across your blog. My grandfather was Hilton. I see that you said your great grandpa is Daniel. Is your grandpa Gerald? Daniel is my great grandfather also.
